Dangerous Minds… my first day substitute teaching

A few weeks ago, I began my substitute-teaching career. With high hopes and ready to impact students for just that one day, I strolled into the first high school with great optimism and enthusiasm. To also test my ability and tolerance range, I accepted a position at an “at-risk” school. My day soon turned into 1995’s movie Dangerous Minds. 1^st – 4^th period walked all over me: they listened to multiple hip hop songs on their ipods, danced out of their seats, and tossed a football back and forth. By 4th period I was tired of raising my voice, so I decided to threaten the kids by writing their names down. Though empty threats were they not, the students called it bluff. Needless to say I had a full running list by 5^th period.

6^th period walked in, and a girl started shouting “Ching-Chong Chang!! Ching Chong Chang! Give me my fried rice! Give me my Panda Express.” I couldn’t help but to laugh because it seemed unbelievable to me. When the appalled look on my face faded, I put her name down with an asterisk next to it. Minutes later she pulled out a pink flat iron and plugged it into the wall. While the rest of the class continued in their group conversations, I saw her take the flat iron and begin to groom her hair.

I asked the girl to put it away. Immediately my request was met with an attitude. I put her name down again and she then rolled her eyes at me and put the flat iron away.

That was my first day. The next day, the teacher called me and reported that she had scheduled parent conferences with all the students on my list. I won’t be going back there for a while in fear that I might get stabbed. Weeks later, I heard on the news a bomb detonated in that same high school’s cafeteria. Thankfully no one was hurt.
